The Golden Fleece 4-H Club Teaches Felting at Tom McCall Middle School's Australian Day 1/26/04
(Published in the Spring 2004 4H "The Wire" newsletter)

In January of 2004, the newly formed 4-H group, The Golden Fleece Club met to make felt and discuss how to teach felting. We made wrist bands, practiced teaching and discussed what would be needed to teach this to groups of 20 to 25 in twenty minute increments.

We practiced our teaching by setting a timer and then the 4-Her's came into the room making as much noise and chaos as they could muster to imitate the beginning of each session. They asked questions over and over again and let the teachers know when things needed to be said differently.  Members Raeanna Landon, Mandy Oriet, and Spencer and Shelby Bartor, made a good training team.  By the end of the day we had a list of supplies and felt we were ready to take this show on the road!

Our goal was to teach the whole sixth grade class how to felt during the Australian Day at Tom McCall Middle School.  Materials were gathered by Lisa Roskopf, 4-H resource leader, Mandy Oriet, club president, and Lisa Zietz, 4-H leader.

On January 18, 2004, the two leaders met at the school where they were joined by Mandy Oriet, and her teacher Ms. Palmer.  They set up and started teaching at 1 p.m. Over 100 sixth graders were taught to make felt wrist bands. There were five sessions and everyone was able to tie their wrist band on by the end of each session.  It was a success!

On May 15th the Golden Fleece 4-H Club will again be offering a chance for children to learn to felt.  They will be teaching two sessions in felting at the 4-H learning day at PCC. “I think we might need another practice teaching session”, said Lisa Zietz, “but that’s all part of the fun!” Come join us at PCC Rock Creek and learn how to felt.  There are numerous other interesting classes offered at the 4-H learning day. It looks like it will be a fun and informational day for both youth and adults!

Teaching Fiber Arts at Mountain View Middle School

This was a 6 week Fiber Arts course in learning and working with wool.  Washing dying, and felting wool were the main objectives along with a live demonstration in shearing wool off of a sheep and making drop spindles for spinning wool.   Click under photo for more information about this class.

Portland Community College Vet Tech students
visit Hawks Mountain Ranch

30 students in 2 separate groups visited Hawks Mountain Ranch to get an up close and personal look at a goat and sheep farm.   It was lots of fun to be a part of the education process for future vet technicians.

Mountain View Middle School Winter Festival

Each year, a few of us "Wild Goat Women" get together and participate in this annual community event.  We help educate about fiber animals with a live exhibit of animals as well as finished items made out of goat and sheep wool.  We also help to promote 4H and the Washington County Fair.
