The difference between Tetanus Antitoxin
versus Tetanus Toxoid
Tetanus Toxoid:
Helps the body to develop permanent immunity against
Tetanus. The kids should be vaccinated within 1 month of age if the
dam was not vaccinated 4-6 weeks prior to birth if kid. If dam was
vaccinated, then each kid is vaccinated again at 4 weeks of age (see CD
& T below) then a booster given annually along with all adult goats
and sheep.
Tetanus Antitoxin:
Gives temporary protection for about 2 weeks but
does not give permanent immunity to tetanus. It is used prior to
surgery, disbudding, castrating or any open wounds. It is also
used for treating animals with tetanus but is not always successful once
the animal has contracted tetanus.
CD & T:
Vaccination called Clostridium perfringens Types C & D and Tetanus
is used to prevent and treat enterotoxemia (over eating disease) and
Tetanus. The kid at birth is protected if the Dam was
vaccinated 4-6 weeks prior to kidding. The kid is vaccinated at 4-6
weeks of age.
